Doctoral Degree Program
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The structure of the Doctoral Degree Program in Nursing, with its two Areas of Concentration, has its structure made up of 48 credits, these being:
- 8 credits in mandatory courses – instrumental axis (common to both areas);
- 6 credits in elective courses specific to the area of concentration (at minimum, from a range of 6 courses in area 1 and 5 courses in area 2);
- 22 credits in elective courses from the flexible axis, or in elective courses specific to the area of concentration (besides the 6 minimum credits), or in courses from the Master’s Degree Program or other graduate programs at UFSC, or in validated courses from other programs (respecting the limits imposed by the regulations on credits validation);
- 12 credits in Dissertation work.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Advanced Research in Health and Nursing I – 4 credits
Description: The quantitative approach in research: bases, trends and advances. Evidence-based practice. Theoretical and methodological deepening on the different quantitative research designs. Quantitative research project: problem, objectives and hypothesis, sample, variables, strategies for data collection, registration and organization. Descriptive and inferential statistics. Main parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. Data preparation and presentation. Critical analysis of quantitative research reports.
Advanced Research in Health and Nursing II – 4 credits
Description: Trends, advances and perspectives in research and innovation on health and nursing. Methods, techniques and instruments for data analysis from qualitative and quantitative approach. Research report preparation. Rigor and ethics in research. (Prerequisite: Advanced Research in Health and Nursing I)
Philosophy of Science, Nursing and Health – 3 credits
Description: Ontological and epistemological bases of science, nursing and health disciplines. Science, ethics and technology. Historical analysis of philosophical thought and its contribution to the field of health and nursing.
Care and technologies in Nursing and Health – 3 credits
Description: Ontological, epistemological and methodological dimensions of Nursing and Health care. Models of nursing and health care. Technological Innovation and production, emerging technologies, art and creativity in care practices.
Policies, management and assessment of Nursing and Health care – 3 credits
Description: Theoretical-philosophical conceptions of nursing and health management. Policies and technologies for nursing and health management and evaluation. Organizational systems for nursing and health care. Policies and technologies for nursing and health service management. Nursing and health planning. Nursing and health quality. Nursing and health accreditation.
Health promotion in the human living process and Nursing – 3 credits
Description: Health promotion and education in the living process. Sociocultural care practices aimed at the individual, family and community in contemporaneity. The contribution of philosophy and socioanthropology in health and nursing. Principles of health promotion and strategies for action. Daily life, postmodernity and imaginary in the living process and in health promotion.
Care in chronic conditions – 3 credits
Description: Nursing care of people in chronic conditions in the process of living, falling ill and dying. Conceptions that form the basis for individual, group and community care. Care in human aging. Health promotion and quality of life.
Care in acute conditions – 3 credits
Description: Nursing care of people in acute and emergency conditions in the process of living, falling ill and dying. Health promotion and accident prevention. Evidence-based practice.
Public policies on women’s and newborn health care – 3 credits
Description: Historical and political aspects related to women’s and newborn health. Contextualization of government programs, current legislation and the contribution of nursing in the field.
History of Education, Health and Nursing – 3 credits
Description: Critical reflection on the history of therapeutic practices and of health and nursing training. Constitution of the health professions in the global social context with emphasis on Brazil. Historical relations of the professional practice with the social structure, the health policies, and the knowledge production paradigms.
Work process in Health and Nursing – 3 credits
Description: The theoretical debate on health work and nursing work, in the context of human work and historical transformations. Workforce, purpose, object, instruments and product. The work project as objective formulation of the purpose. Work and profession: subjectivity and objective conditions.
Technologies and management in Health and Nursing Education and Work – 3 credits
Description: Theoretical, philosophical, political and methodological conceptions of management in educational and teaching organizations. Social public policies and educational management in nursing and health. Institutional assessment of teaching, health and nursing. Paradigmatic bases for the production and application of technologies. Information Technologies and Informatics and Telenursing. Emerging technologies based on the Web and Teleducation for education, health and nursing.
Teacher training and development in Health and Nursing – 3 credits
Description: Theoretical and philosophical aspects of teacher training in nursing and health. Critically-reflective teacher training. Teaching and learning concepts, assumptions and trends. Analysis of education policies. Assessment in teaching. Teaching-service integration.
Professional Training and Development in Health and Nursing – 3 credits
Description: Theoretical and philosophical aspects of the professional training in nursing and health at different levels (professional secondary education, undergraduate education and graduate education). Permanent training of health and nursing professionals. Public policies on education and work. Process of education at work.
Special Topics in Nursing – 1 to 2 credits
Description: Development of current, controversial and/or innovative topics of interest for research, care and teaching in nursing and health. NB: This course is offered on the initiative of the program, in response to a request from a set of students (minimum of 5 students) or due to exchange opportunities of faculty and research projects. It has a specific description according to the topic chosen.
Teaching Practicum – 2 to 4 credits
Description: Participation in teaching activities at the secondary, undergraduate or graduate level. Trying out new teaching and learning methodologies/technologies. Inter-institutional exchange of curricular and/or extracurricular activities.
Credits – Dissertation Work – 12 credits
Description: Activities for the theoretical-methodological development of the Doctoral dissertation.
NB: The Doctoral student can take elective courses from the Master’s Program and the Professional Master’s Program in Nursing Care Management, particularly in his or her area of concentration.
